- Incorporating technology into the classroom is pivotal nowadays. The main influence for teachers and students to utilize technology in the classroom is simply the fact that technology is everywhere in our society. In today's world kids begin using technology at a young age and it is integrated into their daily lives through phones, televisions, and iPads. If teachers were to bring these tools into their classrooms they can not only make learning more fun and interactive but also teach students how to safely and effectively use their technology at home. In addition to also helping the teachers as well make lesson plans and communication easier.
- I am a big advocate for the power that schools hold to make good citizens for our world outside of their time in the education system. Therefore, i believe that the ISTE standard for educators that is most meaningful to me is the "citizen" standard that they set. Technology is a privilege that we, as students, all take advantage of in our daily lives (especially social media) and it is pivotal that we teach students how to make good decisions when utilizing technology in school and especially at home. Not only can this build a community for a student but it opens up a whole new realm of curiosity and learning.
- Broadly speaking, i guess i kind of agree with the term "digital native." As much as my grandfather wants to believe he is better than me with technology, i just have to disagree. I believe this is true with most kids, especially because, as mentioned before, kids today grow up with technology around them and so their learning begins much earlier. Most of my teachers in the past consistently struggled with the computers, projectors, and smart boards in their rooms. Knowing that there will be tons of advances in technology before i become an educator, i do anticipate my students to know more about it then me (but of course i hope not). But i wouldn't say that i full heartedly agree with the term. There are way too many factors that come into play when we are talking about whether or not a kid is good with technology, such as, socioeconomic factors and even location/accessibility.
Interesting take on digital natives! I definitely agree with the fact that kids growing up with technology would likely know more considering, as you said, that they begin learning about it much earlier. I also agree with the fact that there are many factors to this and we can't always assume that just because a child grew up in the digital native times that they will have the ability to learn and be comfortable with it.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Even though i would classify myself as a digital native, i just believe that the term is too broad and its hard to say the same for the rest of our generation.
DeleteJenna, I completely agree with you on digital natives. Today's kids are learning more and more about technology at a younger age. My mother is a teacher whose been in the field for 35 years and she always tells me how they are making her learn more and more technology skills to teach the kids theses days. She even tells me sometimes the kids help her figure things out with technology. I don't know how well it is going to benefit the kids from learning all this technology at such a young age in the long run, but I guess we are going to find out.
ReplyDeleteI have had to help so many teachers with technology! I definitely agree that when the teacher is just confused and needs helps constantly then it is more of a burden than helping the class.
